CHILDREN FROM NORTHEAST AND DELHI CONNECT THROUGH LETTERS:

    9/24/2018 12:00:00 AM
    CHILDREN FROM NORTHEAST AND DELHI:

Guwahati, Sep 23 (PTI) Children from remote villages of the Northeast and the national capital are engaged in understanding each other’s culture and diversity in a unique way - by exchanging letters.

☛ The initiative is aimed at addressing multicultural diversity and, end racial and ethnic discrimination among children through the almost forgotten art of letter writing.

“Discrimination against people of Northeast in Delhi is not new and through this exchange of letters among children we are attempting to create a human connect among children who are at a geographical distance from each other,” Vibha Lakhera, managing trustee of NGO Reachout Foundation, which has launched the initiative, told PTI.

☛ A pilot project on ‘Say No To Discrimination’ was initiated in Alok Bharti Public School of Delhi to create awareness and sensitise students and teachers regarding multicultural diversity, its acceptance, how it manifests in the schools in the form of favouritism, silent treatment, bullying, teasing, exclusion and discrimination, she said.

☛ At the same time, an exchange of letters and cards was carried out among students in Delhi, Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh to learn about the diverse cultures of these states, Lakhera said.

☛ “The whole process captures the exchange of energy and emotion that goes into writing a letter, posting it, eagerly awaiting a reply and finally receiving one,” she added.

☛ The Foundation in collaboration with India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi is currently holding an exhibition titled ‘Postcards of Change: Letters to and from Northeast’, displaying the letters written by children from Delhi to the Northeast and vice versa.

☛ It will displayhandmade cards, hand imprints with messages about local festivals and letters exchanged among students from Delhi and five schools of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh which gave them a chance to interact with complete strangers but also to learn about different cultures.

☛ “The idea behind this activity is to introduce students to the slowness and deliberate way of communicating with their counterparts who they had never met and who belonged to far off places which were not familiar to them,” the foundation’s executive director Kishalaya Bhattacharjee said.

☛ The project saw a lot of insightful and touching stories being shared through letters and cards by the children. Sanjib, a class 8 student of U N Academy School of Kachugaon in Assam’s Kokrajhar district wrote to a student in Delhi that one should take care of their younger siblings and love them as they are so precious which he realised after the death of his brother during floods.

☛ “His pain and suffering of losing a sibling was evident in the letter and students in Delhi also came to know about Assam, its places, people and also floods,” Bhattacharjee said.

Aman Chakma, a class 6 student of Sneha School at Diyun in Arunachal Pradesh writes about his school, village, neighbours and how they help each other, family parties, going to markets and his hobby of playing football.

CAT SET ASIDE SELECTION BY UPSC TO 57 POSTS IN LABOUR MINISTRY:

    9/24/2018 12:00:00 AM
CAT SET ASIDE SELECTION BY UPSC:

NEW DELHI: The Central Administrative Tribunal has set aside the selection of candidates by the UPSC to 57 posts in the Ministry of Labour and Employment in 2013, saying it disregarded the principles laid down by the Supreme Court for the conduct of exam.

☛ The tribunal's order came on a petition by a man who had challenged the selection procedure adopted by the Union Public Service Commission in that year, contending that the UPSC had allotted 50 percent weightage to interview section in violation of the apex court's directive that the marks cannot exceed 15 per cent.

☛ A bench of CAT Chairman Narasimha Reddy and Administrative member Pradeep Kumar said one cannot expect the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to remove itself from the position of an ideal employer, that too after "the Supreme Court treated it as a role model, and go to the extent of allocating 50 per cent of marks for interview, that too without revealing it in the notification".

☛ It said this kind of exercise does not auger well for a premier and reputed agency like the UPSC.

Petitioner Mukesh Kumar Suman had contended that according to the laws laid down by the Supreme Court, when the selection process comprises of written test and interview, the marks allocated for the letter cannot exceed 15 per cent.

☛ The tribunal while setting aside the selections to 57 posts in the ministry, also ordered the Commission to re-do the exercise and publish the results after allocating 15 per cent weighage to interview.

☛ It also directed the Commission that if any of the selected candidates need to be displaced on account of the exercise, they be adjusted against the existing or subsequent vacancy.

☛ The premiere constitutional recruitment agency had conducted test for 57 posts of Assistant Labour Commissioner and other equivalent posts in the Ministry of Labour and Employment in 2013.

☛ The Commission had released an advertisement declaring the selection process, which included a written objective type test followed by interview.

☛ As per the advertisement, the weightage was to be decided by the Commission. Suman had secured 75 marks in the written test, which was 4th in rank but he was awarded 40 marks in the interview and was out of selection.

LEARN TO IDENTIFY AND DEAL WITH EMOTIONS, SAYS IIT-GUWAHATI COUNSELLOR:

    9/24/2018 12:00:00 AM
    IIT-GUWAHATI COUNSELLOR:

IIT-GUWAHATISuicide is the second leading cause of death among students and most often parental pressure, societal expectations, peer pressure are blamed to be trigger point.

☛ But, it is not always right to blame parents or society for suicides as there is a need to focus on other causes as well, says Pallabita barooh Chowdhury, counsellor at IIT-GUWAHATI, where the 18-year old BTECH student recently committed suicide.

☛ “Our Education system does not teach students like skills and handling emotions distress. In schools, we are never taught to identify the emotions and feelings, which makes students inexpressive .Most of them are not even comfortable taking about emotions, “ says Chowdhury.

☛ Today most students reaching out to her are looking for an advice to handle their relationship and stress related to their emotional well-being and self-image.

☛ “Large number of students visits the counsellors to seek advice on romantic relationship and dealing with stress related to time management and self-management. Many suffer from mood swings and often mistake it as depression, since we all have limited information on mental health” she added.

Chowdhury advocates for teaching mental hygienic practises in schools. Due to low awareness and limited information, students are not even comfortable to seek help.

☛ “Children are not taught to build resilience, have high self-esteem” and have a positive self-image. With our outreach programmes we have to first educate students to be comfortable with concept of seeking help more than they actually need help.” Say counsellor.

☛ Lack of open communication with parents, lack of apathy among peers, growing social isolation of the youth is also some of causes that lead to severe cases of depression and consenquently suicides.

☛ The Trauma that is felt by people surrounding the suicide victim also needs treatment. She adds that is important for peers and families to identify suicidal tendencies and seek clinical intervention. “Just like if an infection is persistent it needs medication, if one has low mood clinical supervision is advised. Ignoring these signs can lead to have severe mental disorder”,says Chowdhury. It’s natural for parents to have expectations from their children because they know their potential and personality traits. But there is a need for open communication to sort out disagreement, and external intervention should be sought, adds Chowdhury

☛ “The old boys who passed in 1961 onwards were so happy to be back in school. Also inaugurated the RO system and smart class arranged by the alumni,” Sisodia tweeted. FROM THE NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR, NO OCTOBER EXAMINATION FOR THE PRIVATE CANDIDATES IN TN:

    9/22/2018 12:00:00 AM
    NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR,NO OCTOBER EXAMINATION:

☛ The Directorate of Government Examinations or DGE has been bringing many changes in the examination system and these changes have been spoken by many. Private candidates of class 10 and 12 have been writing examinations in the October month is known. The Directorate of Government Examinations has now scrapped this October examination. According to the sources it is clear that the private candidates would be allowed to write examinations along with other candidates in the June and July instant exams. The candidates who could not clear exams in March alone could write the June or July instant exams and this is as per the existing method.

☛ The director of government examinations, D. Vasundradevi expressed her views. She spoke about how the teachers were employed for exam work all through the year and how it affected their academic work. Since the number of students appearing for private exams is less, the private candidates would be allowed to write their exams in June/July. She then explained how for each class 40,000 to 50,000 private candidates applied for October exams. More than 2000 teachers would are involved in the exams. She later highlighted about the evaluation process for 4 weeks.

☛ It is important to mention that works such as setting of question paper, printing the question paper and answer booklets, allotting exam centres and evaluating the answer scripts are same when compared to March board exams. In the March 18 lakh students appear for the important board exams. This was confirmed by the director of government examinations. The state government converted plus-1 exam to board exam last year and now 9 lakh regular students appear for the annual board examinations. She spoke about how 2 schools in each district for private examinations were allotted by the DGE. According to DGE, private schools would not accept to be the exam centres for the private exams as it would affect the academic works and the government schools were used as exam centres.

☛ The director of government examinations, D. Vasundradevi later threw light on how for classes 10 and 12 the examinations would be conducted for a period of 2 weeks and how their answer sheets would be evaluated separately. The schools would not be able to function fully during the examinations. From this academic year, all private candidates must clear their plus- 1 examinations so that they become eligible to write their plus-2 board exams. This is due to the additional board exams introduced for plus-1 students.

☛ As per the sources, conducting as many as 3 board examinations in just one and half months was difficult and impossible. This process would have to be repeated in October again and it would put pressure on DGE. The sources also pointed out about the breathing space that was needed for DGE.

☛ Some officials belonging to DGE expressed their opinion and spoke about how clearing the October exam would not be of any help to the students as they have to wait till the next academic year. The officials also spoke about how the students could join college or polytechnics etc if they cleared in June/July exams. The move was criticised by section of officers and they spoke about how the private candidates would have just 2 months if they failed to clear the exams in March. Mr. S.S. Rajagopal who is senior educationist wanted the state government to hold discussion before taking decision.

IIT MADRAS, IEOT-ONGC COLLABORATE TO DEVELOP DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR OFFSHORE PLATFORMS:

    9/20/2018 12:00:00 AM
    IIT MADRAS:

IIT Madras is going to develop a Database Management System for all the 280-plus platforms of ONGC and develop software for Structural Integrity Management System as well.

CHENNAI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is collaborating with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) to enhance the operational life cycle of existing platforms and reduce running and operating cost by optimum use of offshore survey requirements. IIT Madras is going to develop a Database Management System for all the 280-plus platforms of ONGC and develop software for Structural Integrity Management System (SIMS) as well, said a statement from IIT Madras.

☛ Speaking about the importance of this initiative, Prof. Ravindra Gettu said, "This is an important collaboration that has the potential to bring about significant results. We are sure this will be the first of many such tie-ups between IIT Madras and ONGC."

☛ Speaking on the occasion of signing the agreement, Mr. Dinesh Kumarsaid, "This kind of collaboration will go a long way in benefiting the country. This is part of a concerted effort to further industry-academic collaboration and a good start has been made between IIT Madras and ONGC. "

Prof. Ravindra Gettu, Dean (Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research), IIT Madras, and Mr. Dinesh Kumar, Executive Director, Head of Institute of Engineering and Ocean Technology (IEOT), ONGC, Panvel, signed the agreement for the Collaborative R&D project titled 'Development of Structural Integrity Management System (SIMS) For Offshore Platforms of ONGC' here on 12th September 2018.

☛ The existing offshore platforms in Mumbai High have been operational for more than three decades.

☛ "Though the design life has exceeded in some cases, oil and gas production still continues as their reservoirs are producing. Hence considerable effort has been spent on maintaining the structural stability and strength of these platforms for the last 10 to 15 years by both ONGC and IEOT in terms of mitigation measures such as underwater strengthening of members, removal of marine growth and many other activities including load shedding in some cases," said the statement. The project is being spearheaded from IIT Madras by Dr. S. Nallayarasu, Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering who has over 25 years of experience in Oil and Gas industry, research and teaching.

☛ Speaking about the challenges involved in this project, Dr. Nallayarasu, said, "The IEOT and Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras, has been working on several collaborative projects such as non-linear ultimate strength of offshore platforms and structural integrity assessment in the past. The synergy between IEOT and IITM will be continued to develop a technology based tool for monitoring, assessment, inspection and maintenance of structural integrity of existing platforms to fulfill operational and regulatory requirements for prolonged production of oil and gas."

☛ Another feature of this project is to develop the location based design criteria specific to the platforms operated by ONGC in this region. This will become a starting point for development of codes and standards for offshore platforms in India which does not exist as of now. SIMS software is being developed in line with Government of India's 'Make in India' policy under the umbrella of ONGC-PAN IIT program.
