‘OXFORD DICTIONARIES’ WORD OF THE YEAR 2018 IS OUT AND ITS TOXIC-HERE IS WHY IT WAS CHOOSEN:

    11/15/2018 12:00:00 AM
‘OXFORD DICTIONARIES’ WORD OF THE YEAR 2018:

☛ Oxford Dictionary has announced the Word of the Year 2018 and the word is – Toxic. After an emoji and youthquake in 2016 and 2017 respectively, the word is darker and reflects the mood of the world. The Dictionary while announcing the word as the Word of the Year 2018 in a video has said that it was the “sheer scope of its application that has made it standout choice.”

☛ Toxic, which as per Oxford Dictionary means ‘poisonous’ has been used by a large number of people to describe various events. The word can be used to define any poisonous substance which presents an imminent danger to health of the beings around as well as the environment at large. The word recently has featured in a lot of discussions from events to ‘toxicity of plastics’, and so on.

☛ As per the research, “people have been using 'toxic' to describe a vast array of things, situations, concerns and events." The video further adds that the word has been effectively been adapted as a metaphor to describe the cultures, though process, relationships, workplaces and almost everything. Even the #MeToo movement used the word toxic when it “put spotlight on toxic masculinity”.

☛ The word has a very familiar connect with India, especially recently when the “Toxic Air” in the national capital, New Delhi, has been the cause of concern for the local administration and the general population at large. In this case, however, the word has not been metaphoric but literal in its use. With Air Quality Index often touching the Hazardous level in the past 10 days, the people of Delhi may have cumulatively used toxic word more than any other word.
