Applications to open in April for DU admissions 2020

    1/9/2020 12:00:00 AM
The process is expected to be more objective and student-friendly. Application forms will release early to allow more time to students, informed the administration

In an effort to make the admission session more ‘student-friendly’, the University of Delhi (DU) will release forms in advance this year. Pankaj Arora, dean, admissions at DU, informed that the application forms will be made available in “the first week of April” itself.

Last year, the varsity came under scrutiny as the application form was delayed by over a month. The admission for the previous session began on May 31, while it opened on May 15 for the 2018-19 session. Arora informed indianexpress.com that the varsity is working to make the admission process “hassle-free, more transparent, objective and convenient for both parents and students”.

The dean admissions, is also exploring a suggestion to modify the application form. “We are trying for a single-form admission, but this is yet to be finalised. Every college has its own parameters; then there are forms for applying for reservation, etc. If we have a single form, it sure would be a lot easier for students, but we are yet to devise a solution,” he said.

Patrick D’Souza enjoys the unique distinction being the top scorer does not want admission at IIM

    1/8/2020 12:00:00 AM
Thane-based Patrick D’Souza is a 43-year-old who appeared for CAT 17 times and topped it for the sixth time this year. He works as a CAT coach and claims his attempt will not take away any candidate's chance at admission

Patrick D’Souza enjoys the unique distinction being the top scorer — six times — in the Common Admission Test (CAT). In 2019, he figured among 10 candidates from across the country to have obtained a perfect 100 percentile in the nationwide competitive exam. However, the Thane-based 43-year-old teacher at a coaching institute has no intention of applying for admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM).

While many debate the morality of a teacher appearing for the exam, D’Souza points out that he is not hogging a seat from a candidate as he does not apply for admission to the IIMs, even when he can. “Teaching is my calling,” he insists.

D’Souza appeared for CAT for the first time in 1996. While he cracked his exam then, he was not among the top scorers. After pursuing his degree, he worked for a couple of years in marketing and moved on to teaching in 2002, and has been a trainer since then. Nearly a dozen of his students have scored 99 percentile, however, none scored the coveted 100.

Debarshi Chanda , CAT 2019 topperwants to pursue PhD in Economics from IIM

    1/7/2020 12:00:00 AM
"The CAT score is required to apply for various PhD programmes in IIMs. I will do research in Economics and work for the development of the nation," remarked CAT topper Debarshi Chanda

In his third attempt, 22-year-old Debarshi Chanda cracked the Common Admission Test (CAT 2019) with a perfect 100 percentile. But unlike others who aim to study management at the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs), the Jadavpur University student wishes to pursue research in Economics.“The CAT score is required to apply for various PhD programmes in IIMs. I will do research in Economics and work for the development of the nation,” stated Debarshi.

He believes India needs proper economic reforms to overcome the severe slowdown that it is currently undergoing. “The country’s economy could not be an agenda of the government. Every government, whether it is the state or Centre, runs their own agenda with public money, which affects the country’s economy at large,” the 22-year-old commented.Debarshi completed his BTech in Electrical Engineering in 2018 and is currently doing Masters from School of Energy Studies, Jadavpur University.

Last year, Debarshi scored 99.83 percentile in CAT, but chose not to appear for the interview round as he wanted to complete his masters first. Regarding the preparation, Debarshi said he did not follow any particular strategy. “Every day, I would solve various mock test series. Besides, solving mathematics problems and reading newspapers is part of my daily routine. I only follow Amit Sharma’s books on CAT,” revealed the topper.

2019 topper Rishi Mittal on CAT

    1/6/2020 12:00:00 AM
Study materials are important to get a basic understanding of concepts. Thereafter, it is all about preparing your own strategy and attempting as many mock test papers as you can and analysing them, said Rishi Mittal, who wishes to be a financial consultant

Mumbai’s Rishi Mittal, a final year BTech civil engineering student from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Surat is among the 10 candidates — all male engineers — to have obtained a 100-percentile score in Common Aptitude Test (CAT) 2019. He is also among the two NIT students to get a perfect score in the nationwide exam, which over two lakh candidates appeared for.For Mittal, who topped the exam in his first attempt, CAT 2019 was easy. Son of a Mumbai-based financial consultant, Mittal draws his inspiration from his father and was always clear of his goals. “I joined civil engineering because I found it a comfortable subject to tackle. I also like to know the science behind things we see around us,” he said.

On his preparation strategy, Mittal remarks, “Honest, consistent and determined efforts along with discipline are enough to crack any exam.” He devoted at least one hour early in the morning and 3-4 hours during the day to his preparation. “Since I knew that I wanted to opt for management, I devoted time to studies daily and devised a timetable around my classes. During winter and summer breaks, I would study 7-8 hours a day,” he shared.

“CAT is an easy exam, one can crack it if they are honest in their preparation. Study materials are important to get a basic understanding of concepts. Thereafter, it is all about preparing your own strategy and attempting as many mock test papers as you can and analysing them. I worked hard on my weak points but also ensured that I do not falter a bit in my strong areas, which is what I believe helped me attain 100 percentile,” he commented.

Tips to ace Physics in board exams

    1/3/2020 12:00:00 AM
Many students are almost as scared of Physics as they are of Maths. But fear not! Numericals aren’t the only thing you need to study in Physics. Check out these tips and tricks to ace your Physics exam

Physics is one of the core STEM subjects in board examinations and also among the most dreaded ones due to expansive syllabus and complex concepts. With the board exams just a few months away, here are some tips and tricks to prepare for your Physics exam that would go a long way in tackling it with ease.

No matter how vast or varied the syllabus maybe, an organized study plan holds the key to acing physics in the board examination. Devising a well-planned strategy and following it rigorously will help you greatly. Lastly, remember to not take stress and sleep well during the board examination.

Prepare visual cues for difficult topics and place them across your place of study. Make flashcards, draw diagrams and stick them on a wall, stick graphs near your bed or anywhere you are likely to see it multiple times.

Everything you have learned or studied over the past one year ultimately boils down to efficient revision and time-bound practice. Each time you revise a chapter, your chances of understanding and retaining it increases manifold.

Prepare your notes. Whatever you study, jot down in your own language. If you understand things and write them in your handwriting, your mind will retain for quite long.

Instead of mugging up the formulae and derivations, aim for seeking conceptual clarity. Try to understand the pattern of derivations and practice questions based on them. This will help you register them into your mind for a longer time.

Always stick to your textbook for the syllabus. You should be aware of the chapters that comprise your syllabus and ensure that you are well-versed with them.
