IIT-Madras students develop drone ‘Agricopter’ to automate pesticides spraying

    7/24/2019 12:00:00 AM
Every year 10,000 farmers died in India and health of many is adversely affected due to use of pesticides. The drone 'Agricopter' will be available at service mode for Rs 350 per acre

The journey of making ‘Agricopter’ started back in 2018, when one of the three developers, Rishabh Verma who hails from a farmer’s family narrated issues faced by farmers to his friends. Quoting data from Chandra Bhushan, deputy director-general, Center for Science and Environment (CSE), Verma said, each year, around 10,000 farmers die in India from the harmful effects of chemicals in the pesticides.Students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras developed a device ‘Agricopter’ which will eliminate the need of manual spraying of pesticides in the fields by the farmers. The hexacopter drone can spray pesticides 10 times faster and claims to provide 100 per cent accuracy with its multispectral imaging camera to make smart maps of farmland based on the health of the crops.

The manual spraying is a very tedious process. Every year 10,000 farmers die in India and health of many is adversely affected mainly due to two of the pesticides — monocrotophos and oxydemetonmethyl which were mentioned as class 1 pesticides by the World Health Organisation (WHO).Verma who hails from an agricultural family in Rajasthan said, “The economy of India is mainly dependent on farming, but we did not upgrade the techniques involved in the same. There is an urgent need to change farming techniques, and the device – Agricopter will provide a new avenue of farming.”After initial research with farmers, farm-based organisations, pesticide sellers and associations, the journey of making a drone started. “When we discussed the issue of pesticides with farmers, and the pesticide associations, we found that many people do not have the knowledge about proper applications of the pesticides. Our main aim is to aware people first. Currently, we will run trial runs at the device. Once it is finalised we will provide it on service-basis at Rs 350 per acre,” he said.

DU 6th cut-off for UG course to release this week

    7/24/2019 12:00:00 AM
Apart from caste-based reservation such as SC, ST and EWS reservation, the varsity offers religious minority reservations in many colleges

The University of Delhi (DU) will be releasing the sixth cut-off for admission to undergraduate courses. The varsity had earlier notified to release only five cut-off lists. Rajeev Gupta, head, admissions committee, DU said, “We are processing the data on the number of admissions received under the fifth cut-off. This will take a couple of days after which the next cut-off will be released.”He further informed that there are chances that the cut-off will be released for reserved seats only. “The cut-off lists depends upon the number of seats left vacant. Once we are done processing that we will also be clear if there are any seats left in the unreserved category, else admissions will take place only under the reserved category.”

This year, apart from the caste-wise reservation, the newly introduced reservation of up to 10 per cent seats under Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category was also implemented. The EWS seats, like the foreign reservation seats, are supernumerary in nature – implying that there is the addition of these seats without impacting the present seat matrix.

Dravidian University's Tamil course remains unfilled - No takers

    7/23/2019 12:00:00 AM
The fee window will be open from July 23 to 29, 2019. Candidates will also have to appear for document verification till July 30

The Dravidian University was set up in 1997 at Kuppam in Chittoor District in Andhra Pradesh with the sole purpose of promoting Dravidian culture and literature on par with Hindi. Nine-years after the Institution was set up, the Tamil department in the Dravidian University came into existence.

There are no takers for the Tamil Language and Translation course being offered by the Dravidian University this year.Lack of awareness among students about the course could be the reason behind the drop in numbers. There are two reasons why the number of applications got reduced this year. Students are unsure whether a Tamil degree from a University in Andhra will provide value in their state. Secondly, the students who are residing in the district borders are hesitant to come here and study. They are unaware of the value this course holds, they think instead of traveling so far to Andhra to obtain a master’s degree they can get in their place of stay. The university’s Tamil department, which offers Masters, M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes, has a sanctioned intake of 20 students per year.

The head of department also feels that the university could have extended the admission date until July like last year instead of closing it by June. “We have decided to run an awareness campaign about this course from mid-February next year in Tamil Nadu. We will educate the students about the value of this course and we will assure them job security,” Vishnukumaran said.Currently, there are seven regular and seven part-time students in the Ph.D. programme. The department will be offering a one-year diploma course from next academic year.

DU curriculum: Here are the list of changes sent to English department

    7/22/2019 12:00:00 AM
A long list of changes has been sent to the English department regarding the curriculum

The Undergraduate Curriculum Revision Committee of Delhi University has sent a "long list" of modifications to the English department despite changes already being made to the syllabus.Despite complying with all the syllabus modifications required by the committee and removing the texts that the RSS-backed National Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF) had objected to, the committee has sent another long list of modifications to be made by the English department, Saikat Ghosh said. The English department had removed stories that apparently showed right-wing groups Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Bajrang Dal, in a bad light after objections were raised at a meeting of the academic council.

All these modifications are absurd and listed in order to make a mockery of the efforts of teachers who have worked hard for two years with the hope that the DU will eventually be able to give it's English students a syllabus that is genuinely at par with the best in the world.

No immediate response was available from the varsity.
