TO WRITE BOARD EXAMS, STUDENTS OF TN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS WOULD NOT TRAVEL MORE THAN 10KMS:

    11/27/2018 12:00:00 AM
    TO WRITE BOARD EXAMS:

☛ The state of Tamil Nadu has got around 3000 government higher secondary schools. It is now revealed that the students studying plus-1 and plus-1 in these schools would not travel more than 10km to write their board examinations in the month of March in 2019. In the last 2 years, the Directorate of Government Examinations or DGE has awarded more new examination centres to more than 10% of government higher secondary schools in TN. It must be taken into account that in the month of March in 2017, DGE made many heads turn when it had set up as many as 2427 examination centres for around 9lakh students. The school education department increased the number of examination centres in TN to 2794 for the students of plus-1 and plus-2. This increase in the exam centres took place when the school education department introduced board exams for plus-1 students. One important point is in the previous year roughly around 220 government higher secondary schools got additional examination centres. The sources have confirmed that over 80 government schools in TN would get new examination centres in many remote places belonging to Tamil Nadu.

☛ The superb piece of information is to ensure that students do not have to travel more than 10 km to write their board examinations, DGE has awarded exam centres to 10 % of total government schools. The main advantage is it would save the travel time for the students on the examination day. In the 2019 approximately 18 lakh students would be writing their plus-1 and plus-2 board examinations in Tamil Nadu. There must be a minimum of 150 students at the examination centre and this was as per the norms. It is now brought out that in this 2018 there were some government schools in remote places that got centres with less than 100 students also.

☛ There were few complaints from the headmasters of schools regarding the strength of the government higher secondary schools that was declining. The headmasters also welcomed the decision to allot additional exam centres to the government schools. It is worthy to note that the schools that had student strength of more than 1000 have been reduced to few hundreds.

It is now brought out that engineering colleges (non autonomous) belonging to Chennai and around the Chennai have got top 10 positions of the college performance chart. In Tambaram in Chennai is located Sri Sairam Engineering College. This popular college has topped the list and the superb piece of information is as many as 146 university rank holders at both undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels were from this Sri Sairam Engineering College. ☛ The official data has confirmed that the college that produces as many as 1200 every year has retained the top spot for the last 5 years. The two main factors that were responsible for Sri Sairam Engineering College to retain the top position was better teacher to student ratio and smaller classrooms in terms of student strength. This was confirmed by Mr. Sai Prakash Leo Muthu, the CEO for Sri Sairam Group of Institutions.

☛ It is worthy to note that AICTE or All India Council for Technical Education, government’s technical education regulatory body changed the teacher student ration from 1:15 to 1:20. Sri Sairam Engineering College was one among very few institutions that did not fire teaching faculty based on the above. According to Mr. K. M. Karthik, Private Colleges Employee Union, more than 12,000 teachers lost their jobs in 2018 and this was reflected in the overall academic performance of the students in the year. As per the data it is clear that out of total 497 affiliated non-autonomous colleges only 115 managed to record a pass percentage of 50 percent or more.

☛ Chennai based Panimalar Engineering College secured second position as it was responsible for producing as many as 131 university ranks. The popular St Joseph College of Engineering secured third position by producing 130 university ranks. SSN College of Engineering has got 4th position in the list and it produced 112 university ranks. By producing as many as 85 university ranks Velammal Engineering college secured 5th position. An educational consultant from Erode expressed his views regarding Chennai based engineering colleges securing top position in the list. He said due to perception that employability and industry interaction is better in and around Chennai, many toppers of class 12 prefer Chennai based engineering colleges. He later revealed that the placement trends were worry some in the last 3 years due to demonetisation and GST. He added that there were better chance of students joining Chennai engineering colleges to get placed or start small industry by means of various government schemes and loans.

☛ A principal of a Trichy based engineering college spoke his heart out and said answer scripts of the students from other districts like Trichy mainly go to the evaluation centres in and around Chennai. Evaluation and expectations of the teaching staffs at these centres were higher and hence students got low marks. In the rank list, many autonomous colleges such as PSG College of Technology and Kumaraguru College of Technology were not included because these colleges prepare their own content, conduct examinationons and release results as per UGC guidelines. Anna University does not conduct any examination for these autonomous colleges.

MATHEMATICS QUESTIONS TOUGH AND LONG SAYS CAT ASPIRANTS FROM CHENNAI CITY:

    11/27/2018 12:00:00 AM
    MATHEMATICS QUESTIONS TOUGH AND LONG-CAT:

☛ On the morning slot on Sunday, 25th of November, many MBA aspirants wrote common admission test or CAT 2018 in Chennai city. The news is many of these MBA aspirants found mathematics question paper difficult and lengthy. It is now predicted by some experts that the cut-off scores this year might go down. The experts were also of the opinion that the competition for admission into IIM or Indian Institute of Management or for other top business schools in India might increase. These IIMs and other top business schools accept CAT scores for MBA admission is a well known fact.

☛ There were a total of 100 questions in the computer based test and out of that 27 questions were non-multiple choice questions. The 3 sections that the aspirants had to answer were verbal ability and reading comprehension or VARC, data interpretation and logical reasoning or DILR, quantitative ability or QA. As per those candidates who sat for the test in Chennai on the slot one it is clear that there were more geometry questions and lengthy arithmetic questions in QA sections and this took many aspirants by surprise. Many found it difficult to complete the test on time.

☛ National CAT course director, TIME, Mr. Ramnath Kankadandi, spoke about how the response from the aspirants had showed that there were plenty of difficult questions this year. He later compared the CAT 2017 with CAT 2018 and said that with few tricky questions and added possibility of silly mistakes, the cut-offs this year could go south marginally. There were only 6 centres set up in TN and at the Kundrathur centre in Chennai there were confusions as the late comers were not allowed to write the CAT 2018. It is known that CAT is conducted every year by one of the IIM`s and this is according to the rotation policy.

NEET 2018 RESULT: NO GRACE MARKS FOR STUDENTS AS SC QUASHES MADRAS HC DIRECTIVE:

    11/23/2018 12:00:00 AM
    NEET 2018 RESULT:

☛ Madras High Court’s order to award 196 grace marks to Tamil students for NEET 2018 results has been put aside by the Supreme Court. The apex court yesterday quashed the Madras HC order which had directed the Central Board of Secondary Education to give grace marks to students who had appeared for the NEET 2018 examination in Tamil language. The order was given due to erroneous translation of 49 questions. CBSE had subsequently contested the order in SC which had stayed the Madras HC order and permitted CBSE to release NEET 2018 results.

☛ SC in its judgment called out for the method and noted, "The method adopted by the High Court is manifestly arbitrary and unjustified and cannot be sustained." It also observed that Madras HC had made no attempt to ascertain whether or not the students deserved to be awarded full marks for the 49 errorneously translated questions.

☛ Noting further, SC noted that many students who appeared for the NEET 2018 examination continued to attempt the questions, even when the translations were not perfect. Moreover, following the rule, students who had scored only 21 marks would end with a total of 217 marks, which would be unjust and unfair.

☛ Madurai Bench of Madras HC has on July 10th asked CBSE to award 196 grace marks to all the students who had appeare for NEET 2018 in Tamil language. This order was then contested by CBSE which shared that it was duly notified by the board that in case of discrepancy in translations, the English version would be final. SC had stayed the order and has now quashed the same.

☛ Further, ANI reports that the court also directed that from the year 2019-20 onwards the NEET-UG Examination will be conducted by the National Testing Agency and the bilingual examination will be conducted after the question paper is translated as set out according to the instructions in the affidavit dated October 22, 2018, signed by Dr Vikas Gupta, Director, National Testing Agency.

DELHI NURSERY ADMISSIONS 2019: UPPER AGE LIMIT FROM THIS YEAR? PROCESS LIKELY TO START FROM NEXT MONTH:

    11/23/2018 12:00:00 AM
    DELHI NURSERY ADMISSIONS 2019:

☛ It is that time of the year again when lakhs of parents swarm to various schools in the city, in the dim hope of securing a place for their children. A burgeoning population, stringent distance rules and higher demand than supply of schools in the city makes the Delhi Nursery Admissions uniquely distinguishable. Adding to the many woes of the parents this year is the looming prospect of upper age limit implementations in Delhi Nursery and Kindergarten admissions for the academic year 2019.

☛ For the uninitiated, the Delhi government in the year 2015 proposed and implemented an upper age limit for admissions in the pre-primary classes or nursery and kindergarten classes. As per the criterion, the child ought to be less that 4 year old for admission to nursery and less than 5 year old for admission to kindergarten. For admission to class I, the child has to be 6 or less on the cut-off date (which is usually April 1s of academic year in question.)

☛ The order was contested in the Delhi High Court which upheld the government circular. However, due to the delay and the impending admissions, the rule was stayed for implementation in 2018-19 for private schools. Government schools, on the other hand are following the rule and ensuring the admission criteria.

☛ With no stay this year, private schools would be required to follow the upper age limit criteria for the nursery admissions. DoE (Directorate of Education) Director, Sanjay Goel told TOI that the upper age limit will come into force for private schools from 2019 onwards.

☛ The upper age limit would be a big concern for many parents as thousands of them had to seek admission in NCR schools as they could not secure a seat. With the upper age limit provision added to the already lengthy list of schools, getting admission to the school of their choice would add to the perilous process.

☛ Delhi Nursery Admissions 2019 are expected to start in the second week of December. Private schools would be allowed to implement their point based system on the approved list of points as qualified by the Delhi HC. Dates are expected to be released soon. Last year they started from December 27.
