DU colleges may increase number of seats under sports, ECA categories

    6/6/2019 12:00:00 AM
Till last year, this was only applicable to the ECA category but now it has been extended to sports also.

The colleges under the Delhi University (DU) may increase the number of seats sanctioned under the ECA and sports categories at the department level in case there is a higher demand, but without breaching the five-per cent ceiling of sports and ECA admissions.Every college has to take a maximum of five per cent of the total intake of students under the sports and Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) categories. In case a department does not see the number of seats being filled up under these categories, the vacant seats can be transferred to another department, but without breaching the five-per cent cap.Till last year, this was only applicable to the ECA category but now it has been extended to sports also.

“Usually it is seen that the students in the sports and ECA categories opt for humanities and social science programmes, rather than science, since they feel they may not be able to cope with the pressure in the latter.

As per an official , “So, in case there are no admissions under the sports and ECA categories in the Science department, the vacant seats can be transferred to another department where there is a greater demand, but without breaching the total number at the college level” .The decision to extend this to sports was taken at a meeting on Monday.

    Make Sanskrit India’s official language

    6/6/2019 12:00:00 AM
National Commission for Scheduled Tribes Chairman Nand Kumar Sai said India would have done better had Sanskrit been made its official language.

Amid a controversy over Hindi being part of a three-language formula, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes Chairman Nand Kumar Sai Thursday demanded that the government make Sanskrit the official language, as many Indian languages originate from it. He also said that southern states would not object to Sanskrit, unlike Hindi.“It’s good that you want to learn English. But you should also learn and respect your own language which is Sanskrit.Sanskrit is a complete language, while English lacks logic,” he said.

Sai said India would have done better had Sanskrit been made its official language. “Sanskrit is close to Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malyalam and even Hindi. Therefore, it should be made compulsory for everyone. Also, people in other regions won’t oppose it,” he claimed. The three-language formula under the draft National Education Policy (NEP), which has since been modified, had recommended Hindi teaching in all government schools. After facing an intense backlash from Tamil Nadu and protests in several other states, the Centre dropped the contentious provision of compulsory teaching of Hindi in the revised draft education policy.

Gujarat government cancels Navratri vacation for schools and colleges

    6/6/2019 12:00:00 AM
State Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said the Cabinet took the decision to scrap the holidays after considering representations from various stakeholders, including teachers’ associations and guardians who had demanded cancellation of the vacation.

The Gujarat government on Thursday cancelled the eight-day Navratri vacation for state-run schools and colleges in the state, a year after introducing it. State Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said the Cabinet took the decision to scrap the holidays after considering representations from various stakeholders, including teachers’ associations and guardians who had demanded cancellation of the vacation.“Like last year, the state Education Department had decided to give Navratri vacation this time too. However, after deliberations, and in the wake of representations received from various quarters, the Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, decided not to give Navratri vacations,” Chudasama said. The minister also said that the state government has decided not to extend the summer vacations in the state-run schools. The Education Department had announced last month to give eight-day Navratri vacation between September 30 and October 7 this year.

In July last year, the state government had reintroduced Navratri vacation, citing low attendance in schools during the festival period. To accommodate the additional holidays, the state government had reduced Diwali holidays to two weeks from three weeks. Many private schools, however, had expressed apprehensions that the move would adversely affect the studies of students, especially those appearing for Class X and XII board exams.

However, the vacation was not applicable to the schools affiliated to the CBSE, the ICSE or other boards.

The move faced opposition from a number of schools affiliated to the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) in Rajkot and Surat.

The colleges under Delhi University may increase the number of seats sanctioned under the ECA and sports categories without breaching the five percent ceiling

The colleges under Delhi University (DU) may increase the number of seats sanctioned under the ECA and sports categories at the department level in case there is a higher demand, but without breaching the five percent ceiling of sports and ECA admissions.Every college has to take a maximum of five percent of the total intake of students under the sports and Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) categories. In case a department does not see the number of seats being filled up under these categories, the vacant seats can be transferred to another department, but without breaching the five percent cap.Till last year, this was only applicable to the ECA category but now it has been extended to sports also.

In case it is seen that one department has a vacant seat, while another department, which has already had one admission under the category, is seeing one more aspirant, that vacant seat might be transferred to the other department.According to a circular, "However, in case of greater demand in a particular course, up to a maximum of double the number of seats sanctioned under the ECA and sports categories in the said course may be admitted by a college, subject to the overall ceiling of five percent."DU Academic Council member Rasal Singh said the move would ensure that only the deserving students got admissions to the university.
