OU TURNS DOWN ENGG STUDENTS REQUEST TO SCRAP DETENTION POLICY:




OU SAYS ‘NO’ TO SCRAP DETENTION SYSYTEM:

Osmania University has turned down the request to scrap the detention system and sought to dismiss the misinformation campaign against the system, being followed in the University College of Engineering.

☛ In a statement here, Vice-Chancellor S. Ramchandram said, the companies coming for campus interview place a premium on recruiting candidates with a sound academic record and those without any backlogs. The present detention policy would help students improve their academic performance and prepare them for the tough job market ahead.

☛ The V-C also denied the allegation of students that there have been large-scale detentions during the last academic year under the Choice-Based Credit system. He said out of 18,947 students who appeared, only 8.4% of the students have been detained.

☛ In first year it was 2% out of 5449, second year 13% of 4466 and 8% out of 9,032 in the final year. It has been observed that most students who have been detained had taken admission in affiliated colleges under management quota.

☛ He said a student is detained only when the candidate fails to clear more than 50% of total credits they have earn during the current academic year.

RELAXATION GIVEN:

☛ On the request of the students, relaxation of 9 credits has been given last year which has been continued this year also. Further relaxation is not possible, he said, and added that it is unfortunate that even parents are supporting the students’ agitation.
